Urban ministries — supporting the needy in metropolitan areas — is an important way of serving the Lord at St. Andrew's. Much of our urban ministry focuses on the Austin Street Centre in Dallas.
On the second Sunday of each month, our parish provides a hearty meal, sandwiches, and a beverage to 400 people at the Austin Street Centre. We also provide disposable bowls/plates, plastic silverware, and cups – we go fully equipped!
Many parishioners provide sandwiches each Sandwich Sunday. Also, a team from St. Andrew's cooks the meal and packs all the food and beverages to go down to Austin Street. People from St. Andrew's also serve the food at Austin Street. It's a wonderful experience for parishioners to see the Austin Street Centre firsthand and to see how much our food and presence there is appreciated.
Making sandwiches for Austin Street is easy. Ideal sandwiches include:
Each sandwich should be individually wrapped in a sandwich bag. Place all of your sandwiches in the bread bag and label it with the type of sandwich. Consider making an extra loaf ... if there are enough sandwiches, the people at Austin Street will be able to take a second sandwich for their lunch the next day.
Be sure to have your sandwiches at the St. Andrew's parish hall no later than 5pm on the second Sunday of each month.
